The Allan Labor Government has started construction on Flinders Pier, ensuring this iconic landmark remains a vibrant hub for fishing, boating, and snorkeling for the local community and visitors for years to come.
Minister for Ports and Freight Melissa Horne today announced Bridgewater Marine had been appointed as the lead contractor to deliver the project, which is part of the Labor Government’s $18 million investment to restore some of the state’s most historic piers.
Works will focus on repairing the inner timber section and lower landings of the heritage-listed pier, as well as strengthening its foundations to ensure the structure is fit-for-purpose.
The original Flinders Pier was built in the 1860s and this will be its first major restoration since the 1970s.
To enhance the existing heritage structure, the upcoming works will incorporate the installation of new piles, beams, crossheads, capping beams, and decking.
These works aim to ensure the longevity of this iconic pier while also safeguarding the unique marine life, including the weedy seadragon, allowing it to thrive beneath the surface.
Construction will commence in the coming weeks, with completion expected by mid-2026.
