The Allan Labor Government is delivering one of the nation’s largest purpose-built mountain bike parks in the rugged Mount Sam State Forest at Omeo, responding to a growing interest in outdoor adventure.
Member for Eastern Victoria announced that Stage 2 of the Omeo Mountain Bike Trails project is now open, supported by the Regional Tourism Investment Fund.
The project has added 64 kilometres to the existing trail network, bringing the total to 114 kilometres which is made up of 41 trails offering 600 meters of vertical elevation.
The trail network winds through Mount Sam State Forest, with gravity trails descending from Mount Sam and the ridgelines of Mount Mesley, positioned directly above the Omeo township.
All trails are accessed via the central trailhead at Livingstone Park, which features easy cross-country tracks along Livingstone Creek for riders of all levels to enjoy, allowing for better connection between the trail network, township, and caravan park.
Due for completion next year, the project will also deliver upgrades to trailheads at Livingstone Park, Sam Hill, and Oriental Claims, including new signage, bollards, feature stonework, paving, seating, and bike racks, improving the visitor experience and supporting trail use.
New trail loop signage, iconic ride-through structures, and fixed photo stations will help visitors navigate and enjoy the region’s natural beauty.
The Labor Government provided more than $3.1 million to Stage 2 and supported Stage 1 with $1 million to deliver a diverse range of cross-country and gravity trails, catering to all skill levels - from novice riders to experienced mountain biking enthusiasts.
Victoria’s reputation as Australia’s cycling capital continues to strengthen, with new data from Tourism Research Australia showing the state leads the nation in cycling tourism. In 2024, Victoria hosted around 1.5 million trips that included cycling, contributing $1.5 billion to the economy.
The new trails were delivered in partnership with the East Gippsland Shire Council, which contributed $2.84 million towards Stages 1 and 2 of the project.
East Gippsland Shire Council also received funding through the Enabling Tourism Fund to develop a masterplan and business case to bring new life to the Omeo Justice Precinct. The plans aim to turn the precinct into a lively tourist destination that celebrates the area’s rich history and culture.
The project will explore ways to reuse the heritage buildings and create new business opportunities to attract more visitors and support the local economy.
